Crescent Dunes Solar Power Plant
The Crescent Dunes Solar Power Plant, which is nearing completion, is the first molten salt solar facility to be built in the US. The 600 foot tall tower, surrounded by 10,000 heliostat mirrors, dominates the landscape for miles around. The plant produces power by cycling molten salt through the heat exchanger on top of the tower, where sunlight concentrated by the heliostats heats the salt to over 1,000 degrees F, and the salt is then pumped to storage tanks at the base of the tower, where a water heat exchanger system produces power via a steam turbine. The salt storage tanks are visible at the base of the tower.
